House Fire - 10033 Friendship Road
Thursday, December 9, 2010
At 1227 hours on Thursday, December 9, 2010, the Berlin Fire Company was alerted to respond for a reported residential structure fire in the area of Friendship Road and Ocean Gateway. While en route, Worcester Central advised of multiple calls reporting fire showing from 10033 Friendship Road. They also advised the possibility of an older man and a dog trapped in the building. Assistant Chief Bill Tilghman arrived first to find a single story wood frame structure with heavy fire from sides A, B and D. Chief Tilghman established command and requested additional units to the scene, including a tanker and engine from Showell, a tanker from Ocean City and an engine crew for RIT from Ocean Pines. Engine 604 arrived with the crew placing multiple handlines in service. Crews quickly contained the fire to the front of the house and extinguished the fire. Searches of the residence proved negative, and the homeowners returned to the scene a short time after arrival of the fire department. After extensive overhaul, the fire was placed under control and command released units as ready. Red Cross responded to the scene to assist with housing for the displaced occupants. Firefighters rescued 2 dogs that were found inside the residence at the time of the fire. Thanks to Showell, Ocean Pines and Ocean City for responding to the scene, as well as Newark and Powellville for standing by at Berlin Headquarters during the fire.
