Berlin Flooding - Berlin
Saturday, August 25, 2012
Approximately twenty-five Berlin Fire Company volunteers with six fire company vehicles responded to at least 20 calls between 10 pm and 2 am due to the flooding. These dedicated personnel left the safety of their homes to help their fellow residents and citizens. Responses included many water rescues where persons had driven into high water with their vehicles. Members had to rescue these citizens at their own personal risk with rapidly rising and flowing waters that were at times waist and chest deep. Other responses included motor vehicle accidents and fuel spills. Berlin Fire Company's headquarters provided refuge for several persons displaced by the storm due to its generator capabilities as the remainder of the Town was without power. Several members of the company who have been volunteering over 40 years and have lived in the area all their lives stated they have never seen the flooding as severe as last night. The fire company members are still responding to calls this morning of flooding residences and odor investigation despite only getting 4 to 5 hours rest.
