Storm Brings Fire to Berlin - Whaleyville
Monday, April 6, 2009
With reports of a bad storm coming into the area, members of the Berlin Fire Company gathered at the fire station to standby, anticipating calls for service. At 1015 hours, the wait was over with the call for an outside fire on Sheppards Crossing Road. After initial units went responding, the call was upgraded to a building fire. Assistant Chief Bryon Trimble arrived in Command 6 to find a shed with smoke showing. The crew of Engine 604 placed the 150' 1 3/4" bumper line in service and made quick work of the small fire. While overhauling that fire, a second call for service was dispatched right around the corner on Steam Mill Hill Road for the house on fire. Command 6 went on location with a single story rancher, nothing evident. Interior crews found smoke in structure, located fire in the floor and wall near the gas heater, washer and dryer. A handline was placed in service to contain the fire. As apparatus was leaving the scene of the second fire, a building fire was dispatched in Showell's first due area. Assistant Chief Trimble contacted Showell Assistant Chief Mark Widgeon and advised that Berlin units were close to the call if needed. Assistant Chief Widgeon placed Berlin units on the call bringing Engine 608, Truck 603 and Tanker 605 to the scene. Command 6 was first on scene with fire showing from a 8 x 20 shed. Crews placed the 150' 1 3/4" bumper line in service again, making quick work of the fire. Crews overhauled the building and were released by command shortly after. Crews were back in service by 1230 hours. Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office investigated all three fires. Assistant Chief Bryon Trimble had the command on all three fires.
